Mentor & Volunteer Expectations
Last updated: October 18, 2026
Mentors and volunteers are central to Brave Generation’s work. This page summarizes public expectations for people who support Fellows and program participants. Specific programs may also use written agreements with additional terms.
Purpose
Clear expectations protect youth, mentors, and the organization. This summary complements our Code of Conduct, Safeguarding, and Program Participation Terms.
Role expectations
- Support participants’ education, leadership, and well-being goals
- Show up prepared, on time, and professionally
- Encourage independence and ethical decision-making
- Escalate concerns about safety or well-being promptly
- Represent Brave Generation accurately—without speaking for the organization unless asked
Boundaries
- Maintain appropriate adult–youth and mentor–mentee boundaries
- Do not request romantic or sexual relationships with participants
- Do not pressure participants for personal favors, money, or unpaid labor
- Avoid private one-to-one situations that conflict with program safeguarding guidance
Time and communication
Mentors should follow the cadence set by their program (for example, regular check-ins during an 8-month fellowship). Use approved channels when specified. If you cannot continue, notify program staff as early as possible so participants are supported.
Confidentiality
Treat participant stories, documents, and contact details as confidential unless sharing is authorized. Public storytelling requires consent under our Media & Photo Consent practices and Privacy Policy.
Formal agreements
Some roles require a signed mentor, volunteer, or contractor agreement covering duration, confidentiality, IP, and conduct. This web page is a summary, not a substitute for those signed terms.
