Cookie Policy

Last updated: October 17, 2026

This Cookie Policy explains how Brave Generation Inc. (“we”) uses cookies and similar technologies on www.bravegeneration.org. It is designed for visitors in the EU/EEA/UK (opt-in before non-essential cookies) and the United States (disclosure, opt-out, and Global Privacy Control). Read it with our Privacy Policy.

What are cookies and similar technologies?

Cookies are small text files stored on your device. Similar technologies include pixels, local storage, and scripts that help a site function, stay secure, or measure usage. We do not use advertising cookies to sell personal information.

Which cookies and trackers do we use?

Name / techProviderPurposeTypeRetention (typical)
bg_prefs_v1Brave GenerationStores your Accept / Reject / custom analytics choiceNecessaryUntil you clear site data
bg_prefs_log_v1Brave GenerationLocal proof log of recent consent events (time, choice, GPC)NecessaryUntil you clear site data (last ~25 events)
Cloudflare TurnstileCloudflareBot protection on the newsletter formNecessary (security)Per Cloudflare / session signals
Stripe checkoutStripeProcess donations when you use the donate flowNecessary (payment)Per Stripe policy
Google Analytics (_ga, etc.)GoogleAggregate traffic measurementAnalytics — opt-in onlyUp to ~2 years (Google defaults)
Microsoft ClarityMicrosoftUsability insights (e.g. heatmaps)Analytics — opt-in onlyPer Microsoft Clarity policy

Analytics scripts (gtag.js / Clarity) are not loaded until you Accept analytics (and never while a Global Privacy Control signal is on).

How do EU/UK and U.S. rules apply here?

European Union / UK (opt-in)

Under the ePrivacy Directive (Art. 5(3)) and GDPR, non-essential cookies (including analytics) require prior consent that is freely given, specific, informed, and unambiguous. We:

  • Block Google Analytics and Clarity until you opt in
  • Show Reject and Accept with equal ease on the first banner layer
  • Do not pre-tick analytics checkboxes
  • Do not treat scrolling or “continued browsing” as consent
  • Let you withdraw consent anytime via Privacy settings

Legal basis for optional analytics after Accept: consent (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)). Necessary security/payment cookies: legitimate interests / strictly necessary for the service you request.

United States (opt-out + disclosure)

There is no single federal cookie law. State privacy laws (e.g. CCPA/CPRA) and CalOPPA-style transparency still matter. We disclose trackers here and in the Privacy Policy, provide an easy opt-out, honor Global Privacy Control (GPC), and publish a Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information control (we do not sell data; the control opts you out of analytics on this site). We still use an opt-in gate for analytics scripts globally to reduce risk and keep one consistent technical standard.

How does the cookie banner work?

  • Reject analytics — first-layer button; analytics stay off
  • Accept analytics — loads Google Analytics + Clarity after your click
  • Manage choices — category toggle (Necessary always on; Analytics off by default)
  • Privacy settings (footer) — reopen and change anytime

Global Privacy Control and “Do Not Sell or Share”

If your browser sends the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, we treat it as an opt-out: analytics stay off and Accept is disabled. Required practice in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, and other U.S. states that recognize GPC.

How do we record consent?

When you Accept, Reject, save custom choices, or when GPC applies, we store a local consent record (timestamp, choice, source, path, policy version) and append it to a short on-device log (bg_prefs_log_v1). This helps demonstrate what was chosen on this browser. It is not a server-side CRM; clearing site data deletes it.

How can you manage cookies?

  • Use Privacy settings or the buttons on this page
  • Enable GPC in a supporting browser / extension
  • Block or delete cookies in your browser settings

Blocking necessary cookies may affect donations (Stripe) or form security (Turnstile).
